Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks will open play today in the Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest baseball regional for 14-year-olds in West Jordan, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City.
Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks will first play Selma, Calif., at 2 p.m. There are nine teams in the double-elimination tournament, which concludes Friday.
The team is led by pitcher-outfielder Randy Wolf, who started in the spring as a freshman at El Camino Real High and batted .404. Wolf, who played the outfield for El Camino Real, stole a team-high four bases.
Also included on the team are pitcher-shortstop Kevin Lohman, whose brother Chris starred at Notre Dame High and now plays at UCLA, and Joel Orme, a pitcher-first baseman.
