Museum Astrology Project a Bad Sign
As a professional scientist and lifelong amateur astronomer, I am writing to object strongly to the wrongheaded and erroneous ideas conveyed to the young students in Ms. Marilyn Marks’ “science” workshop at the Fullerton Museum Center as reported by Zion Banks (“Teaching of Science Comes Alive,” Aug. 8).
In these times when clear thinking and valid scientific education at all levels are needed more than ever, Ms. Marks’ approach of confusing the superstition of astrology with the valid science of astronomy is deplorable!
I am particularly distressed by her astrology project in which she encourages her students to prepare “zodiac wheels,” i.e., horoscopes.
It is bad enough that we have astrology columns in our daily newspapers and also politicians at the highest levels making critical decisions affecting all of us based on such drivel. Please, let us at least educate our children properly.
