Cutting Off Aid

European Community’s 12-nation group suspended an aid package of more than $1 billion. This includes $600 million in credits and $500 million in technical assistance. But it agreed to continue delivery of $400 million in emergency food aid. The heads of the EC governments plan to meet Friday for further talks on the coup.
U.S. State Department said no decision has been made on which economic assistance programs would be suspended. However, $900 million in promised loans for U.S. grain and other crops in next fiscal year is in question.
Britain suspended its $80-million program of technical assistance.
Japan withheld assistance, including a $350-million loan to refinance trade debts.
Australia froze the last $62 million of the Soviet Union’s $390-million line of credit.
