SCHOOL BELLS: Wednesday is the first day of classes for most schools in the Long Beach Unified School District, which is anticipating its largest enrollment ever, more than 75,000 students.
BOOK SALE: A book sale and auction, sponsored by the Historical Society of Southern California, will be held at the Charles F. Lummis Home, 200 E. Ave. 43, Highland Park, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday ($2).
LIGHT RAIL: The Highland Park Heritage Trust presents a free lecture and video, “Light Rail in Higland: Past and Future,” at the Huron Substation, 2640 Huron Street, Cypress Park, at 3 p.m. Sunday.
