Controversy Over ACT UP Film

While l didn’t particularly like the film “Stop the Church,” KCET’s decision to broadcast the film was appropriate. For once, a group of managers have elected not to bow to religious blackmail. I have just sent my check to KCET for their courage to take a stand.
Mahony’s advertisement, which calls for a financial boycott of KCET, epitomizes the hypocrisy that underlies teachings of the church. Mahony says that “we in Southern California must constantly remind ourselves that we live in a pluralistic society whose very survival demands that we continually strive to live together harmoniously, respecting each person’s human dignity regardless of race, ethnic origin, religion or any other distinction.” Mahony says he believes in a pluralistic society, but his actions demonstrate his intolerance for such diverse viewpoints. The title of Mahony’s letter (“A Case of Bigotry?”) is appropriate and should be seen as self-referential.
