Azusa : Dump Appeals State Ban

Still advocating that the controversial Azusa landfill should be reopened, the dump’s operator has appealed a state board’s decision that blocks the facility from accepting municipal trash.
In papers filed earlier this month in Los Angeles Superior Court, the Azusa Land Reclamation Co., a subsidiary of Browning-Ferris Industries Inc., is asking that the State Water Resources Control Board be ordered to perform environmental studies on the dump’s potential effects on the region’s underground water supply.
In 1989, the board initially approved the company’s plans to expand the dump, which was nearing capacity, but reversed the decision earlier this year after a lengthy court battle, closing it to all but minimal amounts of rubbish from demolition projects.
