David Statue Defaced: A man pulled a hammer from under his jacket Saturday and attacked Michelangelo’s famed statue of David in Florence, Italy, but museum patrons subdued him before he could seriously damage the 487-year-old masterpiece. Officials at Accademia museum said that the second toe of the statue’s left foot was broken but that all fragments were recovered and that the statue can be repaired. The 47-year-old attacker was charged with damaging a national cultural treasure.
