County Asks High Court to Reverse Kamins Ruling

Los Angeles County has decided to ask the state Supreme Court to overturn an appeals court ruling that disqualified the controversial judge in the Rodney King beating case.
The request, which was mailed Friday to the Supreme Court, contends that an Aug. 21 decision by the 2nd District Court should be set aside because it was based upon “highly prejudicial false evidence” concerning Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins and his handling of the case. That evidence, the county argued, included news reports and court staff opinions that were not part of the official court file in the case.
“Determination of a judge’s alleged bias based upon press perceptions is clearly improper,” Assistant County Counsel Frederick Bennett said in a 25-page petition.
