BALTIMORE — Rebuff presented a strong enough closing argument to upset the odds-on favorite, Double Booked, at the wire Saturday in the Damascus Handicap at Pimlico Race Course.
Rebuff, ridden by Calixto Juarez and trained by Frances Merryman, began to contend while approaching the three-eighths pole. The horse went wide and dug in to nip Double Booked for the victory, paying $14.20, $4.00 and $2.20.
“He beat me at a mile, but at a mile and an eighth, my horse is better,” Juarez said.
Double Booked paid $2.60 and $2.10. Runaway Raja ran third for $2.20 to show.
