The body of a 17-year-old San Marcos boy who drowned while fishing illegally at Lake Wohlford with his friends was recovered Friday.
Miguel Hernandez, of the 300 block of Marcos Street, swam carrying a weighted net across the lake at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sheriff’s Deputy Pearl Janulewicz said.
Hernandez then swam back toward his friends at the east end of the lake, and, when he was about 35 feet from the shore, he began calling for help. One of his friends tried to help Hernandez, but he was not a strong swimmer and could not save him.
San Marcos Fire Department officials and an Astrea helicopter searched the lake until dark. The search was resumed at 6:30 a.m. Friday. Divers found Hernandez’s body at 8:35 a.m. in 8 feet of water near where he was last seen.
