Medflies Found in Hawaii Package

ONTARIO — Mediterranean fruit fly maggots have been found in a United Parcel Service package from Hawaii as agricultural officials continue to track the path of the insects into the state.
California Department of Food and Agriculture inspectors joined the San Bernardino agricultural commissioner’s office this week to check 441 parcels delivered from Hawaii to California. The Medfly larvae were found in coffee berries packed in one shipment that had no return address, and included other seeds, orchids and flower cuttings. Inspectors suspect the shipper deliberately sought to avoid the quarantine inspection.
