Four Los Angeles County inmates suffered minor injuries Tuesday when the van they were riding in suffered a “mechanical malunction” and hit a guard rail on a mountain road near Crystal Lake in the San Gabriel Mountains, county fire officials said.
County paramedic Rafael Ortiz said the van was returning the inmates--whose names were not released--to a base camp after a day of maintenance work under county Fire Department supervision when the accident occurred about 5 p.m. on San Gabriel Canyon Road about six miles north of Azusa.
One inmate, who suffered a possible broken rib, was taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora for treatment. The other three were treated at the scene, Ortiz said.
