After nearly 15 years of decline, participation in high school sports nationally climbed this year to nearly 5.3 million students, up about 41,000 over the previous year. Girls accounted for about 80% of the increase, according to the December issue of NEA Today, the newspaper of the National Education Assn.
The top six states in sports participation: Texas, California, New York, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan.
