Latino Gang Clash Brings Lock-Down at San Quentin

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. — Latino inmates in medium-security housing unit at San Quentin state prison remained under a lock-down Thursday after a fight between rival gangs, officials said.
Prison spokesman Vernell Crittedon said about six inmates were injured during a clash Christmas Eve morning.
“The reason the assault was initiated was a north-south conflict” between 12 inmates of a Southern California Latino gang and 16 inmates who are members of a Northern California Latino gang, Crittedon said.
The prison housing unit holds about 825 prisoners, but the only inmates who remained under a lock-down were about 175 Latino prisoners, he said.
