LATINO SPIRIT: Literature focusing on the Latino experience in this country is finding a wider audience, thanks to mainstream and small publishing houses (E1). . . . Short-story writer Helena Maria Viramontes of Irvine, above, says recognition is growing because “Latino writers inspire a sense of struggle, a sense of dignity and spirituality. The ‘90s are a hard time for people spiritually and (we) offer a sense of struggle and hope. We can’t afford to be bleak.”
