ABORTION: The Supreme Court appears ready to make abortion a key issue in the presidential campaign. On Friday, the justices are scheduled to consider behind closed doors an appeal in a Pennsylvania case that could provide a vehicle for overturning the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
If the justices vote to hear the appeal--which is considered likely--it will be argued before the court in the spring, with a ruling due by July. Abortion rights advocates say they plan to use the issue against President Bush if the conservative court restricts the right to abortion.
An announcement on whether the court will hear the case could come as early as next Monday.
