Fluor Unit Wins $240 Million in TVA Pacts

IRVINE — A Fluor Corp. unit has won $240 million worth of contracts to maintain and modify six power plants in Tennessee and Kentucky, the company said Thursday.
The Tennessee Valley Authority has chosen FD Engineers & Constructors, a subsidiary of Irvine-based Fluor, to work on coal- and gas-burning plants in the two states. FD employees now do maintenance work during scheduled outages at those power plants.
Deborah Land, a Fluor spokeswoman, said the TVA, a federal corporation created by Congress in 1933, recently began hiring outside contractors to help it supply electricity to more than 7 million residents of Southern states.
“This is a brand-new way of thinking for TVA,” Land said.
The agreement consists of two separate three-year contracts. Both contracts include two-year renewal options.
TVA, based in Knoxville, Tenn., serves customers in Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia.
Fluor, a giant engineering and construction firm, said the projects will employ between 100 and 1,500 people, depending on the specific program.
