A Fresno State football player was drunk when he was shot to death Jan. 2 and had smoked marijuana a day or two earlier, autopsy results revealed.
Melvin Johnson had a blood-alcohol level of .16 when he died, a deputy coroner reported. That is double the amount at which Johnson would have been legally drunk had he been driving a car.
Laboratory tests of a urine sample also disclosed traces in Johnson’s system of a chemical compound that is the active ingredient in marijuana.
Johnson, an offensive guard, and his girlfriend, Lisa Kelley, 19, were slain two days before he was scheduled to leave for Honolulu to play in Saturday’s Hula Bowl all-star game.
A 16-year-old boy charged with murdering Johnson and Kelley pleaded not guilty in Juvenile Court on Wednesday and will have a hearing Feb. 12 to determine if he should be tried as an adult.
