Oscar Considerations
Having had the privilege of serving for 36 years on the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, I resent the implication that standards for honorary awards are based on age, health or similar sentimental considerations.
In his letter “Who Deserves Oscar Most?” (Jan. 4), Michael Russnow attempts to explain what might motivate the board in its decisions, which I wish to assure him are not made capriciously. Board members represent various segments of the film industry (producers, directors, writers, actors, etc.) and are selected by their peers. They are men and women of unquestionable integrity and are cognizant of their responsibilities to their respective constituencies.
“Brava” to Liz Smith for instigating this discussion.
