Borden to Cut 1,300 Jobs: Borden Inc., the top U.S. dairy company and a worldwide food producer, said competitive pressures are prompting it to eliminate 1,300 salaried positions. “It’s everything from secretaries to top executives,” a spokesman said. Borden said it will write off $70 million in the fourth quarter to cover severance, relocation and other employee-related expenses. The company has 15,000 salaried employees among a worldwide total of 44,000 workers, down from 47,500 when it began closing plants and taking other steps to become more efficient in late 1989.
