A campaign to recall Mayor Gloria McClellan has been stopped after news that her husband has inoperable cancer.
Michelle Mairesse, spokeswoman for Taxpayers Advocating Responsible Government, said the group will end its efforts out of respect for the mayor.
The recall effort began in August, and the group had collected 2,500 to 3,000 signatures toward the 6,000 needed to force a recall election, Mairesse said.
McClellan announced in a city newsletter that her 70-year-old husband, Mac, has cancer that has spread to his liver. Monday, she said he has been given only weeks to live.
Mairesse said several members of the group, including herself, have lost spouses to cancer and that “all of us felt the same way: that she has enough problems now without having to deal” with the recall election.
Mairesse said the petitions bearing the signatures will be destroyed.
