OJAI : Council Backs Plan for 1 Waste Agency

The Ojai City Council agreed Tuesday night to support the merger of Ventura County’s two major rubbish agencies into a countywide Waste Commission.
However, the city’s approval of the reorganization plan will be accompanied by a letter to the county expressing concerns with some of the financial and decision-making provisions of the plan.
The letter will be written by City Manager Andy Belknap and Councilwoman Nina Shelley, who represents Ojai on the 12-member Waste Commission. Also on the board are representatives of the county’s other nine cities and the County Board of Supervisors.
The commission is to be transformed into a quasi-public utility, with wide-ranging powers including control over landfills and recycling facilities.
Waste management decisions now are split between the Ventura County Solid Waste Management Department, the Ventura Regional Sanitation District, the Waste Commission and the various cities in the county.
