Closing of San Onofre Will Cost Jobs: As many as 500 jobs at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station will be eliminated beginning in late 1993 if Southern California Edison receives state Public Utilities Commission approval to close down the facility’s aging Unit No. 1, Edison officials said. Although none of Edison’s 2,400 employees at the nuclear-powered generating plant will lose jobs because of the closing, Edison would reduce the number of workers who, on a contract basis, handle jobs that range from janitorial to high technology in nature, Edison Vice President Harold B. Ray said. If the proposed shutdown in 1993 is approved by the PUC, Edison will cut as many as 500 of 1,600 jobs that are now filled by contract workers.
