IRA Can’t Break Britain’s Will, Major Says

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Prime Minister John Major came to this embattled province Monday to try to reassure residents that the Irish Republican Army cannot break Britain’s will.
“They cannot bomb Northern Ireland out of its way of life, and they cannot bomb the British government out of its policy,” said Major, speaking three days after an IRA bomb killed seven construction workers.
As Major visited a badly injured survivor of Friday’s explosion, thousands of people in rural County Tyrone turned out to bury six of the Protestant laborers.
The afternoon of burials marked one of the largest shows of communal grief in Northern Ireland in several years. Narrow country roads swelled with thousands of mourners, among them leading clergymen and Unionist politicians.
