WIC Program Explained, Endorsed

Thank you for your coverage of the WIC (Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Food) program here in Orange County. The article by Carla Rivera (“Nutrition Program Drops 3,000 Needy Orange County Children,” Dec. 27) about the needs, and your editorial (“Pay Now and Save on Medical Costs Later,” Jan. 5) about the win-win situation and cost savings of WIC were very informative. Then the letter Jan. 12 from Dr. Gary Chavez, senior resident in emergency medicine at UC Irvine, pointed out the potentially disastrous consequences to the malnourished infants and children who are turned away from the WIC program for lack of funds.
Top corporate executives, as well as ordinary Americans, are asking Congress for full funding of WIC so that all our children get the best possible start in life. This would be a great program for both the President and our Orange County members of Congress to support.
