NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : CS Los Angeles to Induct 5 Into Athletic Hall of Fame

Sisters Denean and Sherri Howard, who won Olympic gold and silver medals, are among five former Cal State Los Angeles athletes who will be honored today with their induction into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Denean and Sherri will be inducted with sister Tina Howard, Lorraine Bradley and Lee Joseph at a banquet at the Tower restaurant in Los Angeles.
Denean and Sherri Howard were members of the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympic teams. They won gold medals in the 4x400 relay in 1984 and silver medals in the same event in 1988.
Tina Howard joined her sisters on Cal State L.A.’s 1985 4x400 relay team that ran a school-record 3 minutes 30.25 seconds.
Bradley, the daughter of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, was the most valuable player for the women’s basketball team, a member of the volleyball team and the Western States tournament singles champion in badminton in 1965.
Joseph was a member of the Cal State L.A. men’s track team that won the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship in 1955 and was runner-up in 1956 and 1957. Joseph was part of a sprint medley relay team that set a school record. He also competed in cross-country.
Mike Collett, a junior pitcher for the USC baseball team, will undergo shoulder surgery and miss the season.
Collett, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-hander who played at Glendora High and Citrus College, was 5-4 with a 4.00 earned-run average last season for USC. He was 5-1 with a 3.33 ERA in Pacific 10 Conference games.
Collett was selected All-Foothill Conference as a utility player in 1990. He compiled a 5-4 record and 3.47 ERA and also batted .333 with 11 doubles and 30 runs batted in for the Owls.
Collett was an All-Southern Section shortstop and pitcher at Glendora High where batted .471 and went 8-4 in 1989. He was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the ninth round of the 1990 amateur draft.
An all-star football team made up of graduating seniors from Southern California high schools is being formed for a game against Hawaiian all-stars June 27 in Honolulu.
The team, which will be coached by Harold George of Mark Keppel, Tony Zane of Baldwin Park and Gil Ruedeflores of Alhambra, will include 48 players. Saturday practices begin at the end of May. The team will depart for Hawaii June 26 and return July 2.
The team will be selected at the end of February based on nominations from high school coaches and inquiries from players interested in participating.
The cost of the trip is $780, including air fare, lodging and food.
Cheerleaders, drill team members and parents are also being sought for the trip.

State cross-country champion Angel Martinez of San Gabriel High will be among the area athletes who will compete in the Sunkist Invitational track-and-field meet Saturday at the Sports Arena.
Martinez will participate in the Foot Locker National High School Mile against a field that includes Kinney national cross-country champion Corey Ihmels of Williston, N.D.
Beginning at noon, more than 30 athletes from the San Gabriel Valley will compete in the high school portion of the meet, which includes sprints, distance races, relays and field events.
The California Interscholastic Federation and Reebok will award $2,000 scholarships to the boy and girl who are selected Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Applications for the awards are available at high school counseling offices. Each school can nominate two athletes.
The application deadline is April 3, and judging will be completed May 11. The awards will be presented June 6 at the state track meet in Cerritos.

Mt. San Antonio College has received a $63,000 grant from the Amateur Athletic Foundation for its sponsorship of the Youth Days portion of the Mt. SAC Relays track-and-field meet.
This is the sixth consecutive year that Mt. SAC has been awarded the grant for an event that features clinics and assemblies for grade school and junior high school students.
The Youth Days portion of this year’s Mt. SAC Relays will be held April 10-11.
The registration deadline is April 1.
