After winning his third Olympic gold medal in the giant slalom, Alberto Tomba stopped off Tuesday night at Casa Italia, a little bit of old Italy in Bourg-St. Maurice, down the twisting road from Val d’Isere.
Wearing his new necklace, he ate a four-course meal--including two pasta dishes, of course--all washed down with a couple of glasses of champagne. This was after he had consumed three sandwiches immediately after the race.
“I was hungry,” he said. “All I had for lunch was some chocolate.”
Tomba also posed for photos with the chefs, brought in from Italy to man this three-week-long restaurant, and chatted with Marc Hodler, president of the International Ski Federation, who was the evening’s other guest of honor.
By 10:30 p.m., Tomba was out the door, headed for a good night’s sleep at Les Menuires and his training sessions for Saturday’s final men’s race, the slalom.
