Add Oddities: Heading into Friday’s first-round Division 3-A girls’ soccer playoff match against Garden Grove League champion Kennedy, El Modena carries a record of . . . 6-6-6.
You want more superstitions? During his team’s recent 10-match unbeaten string, El Modena Coach Tino Younger wore the same lucky shoes, socks, jeans, shirt, warm-up jacket, turquoise visor and underwear. On match days he also carried and munched on a lucky lollipop.
The El Modena players also refused to shave their legs during the streak that began in December.
During the streak, El Modena, which scored only 25 goals all year, ground out physical, defensive-minded 1-0 victories or 0-0 and 1-1 ties. The Vanguards earned a share of second place in the Century League to close out the most successful girls’ soccer season in El Modena history.
And it’s hard to tell what could scare Kennedy the most . . . the Vanguards’ style of play, their record or their legs.
