Valencia Advances Six--Valencia qualified six wrestlers for next week’s Masters meet and placed second with 136 1/2 points at Edgewood Middle School.
David Quintero of Valencia won the 125-pound championship with a 6-5 victory over Rusty Ritenour of West Torrance. “Our team wrestled great in this tournament,” Quintero said. “We didn’t expect this (second place) to happen, but we worked real hard.”
Ventura won the team title with 141 1/2.
Valencia’s Hugh Amaya won the 103-pound championship with a 4-1 decision over Rudy Correa of Santa Maria. “We kept our intensity up, kept our hearts in it and wrestled good because we wanted it,” Amaya said.
Other Valencia wrestlers advancing to the Masters meet at Fountain Valley High were Jim Provencio (second, 112), Gilbert Quintero (third, 119), John Spielman (fourth, 152) Matt Malle (third, 171).
Savanna finished fourth (118 1/2) and qualified three finalists and three alternates for the Masters.
