Riley Goes Home From Hospital

NEWPORT BEACH — Supervisor Thomas F. Riley was released from Hoag Hospital here Thursday after doctors increased his insulin level to correct a problem with his diabetes.
“He’s kind of tired, but other than that, he’s feeling fine,” Riley aide Christie McDaniel said. “We expect him back at work on Monday. Right now, he’s just going through all his mail at home.”
Riley, 79, had been hospitalized late Wednesday afternoon after he found that his blood-sugar count was more than twice its usual level. McDaniel said doctors increased his insulin level for the next several days to try to correct the problem.
The supervisor, who had quadruple-bypass heart surgery last year, also suffers from asthma and emphysema and was hospitalized at Hoag for several days just five weeks ago.
Riley’s health problems have increased speculation that the retired Marine Corps general may step down early from his South County seat. But McDaniel said the supervisor intends to stay at work through the end of his term in 1994.
