The boys’ volleyball team at Estancia High School has forfeited three Pacific Coast League matches for using an ineligible player, according to Trabuco Hills Coach Greg Swenson.
“Estancia’s principal (Frank Infusino) called our principal (Bill Brand) today and told us they were going to forfeit three matches for using an ineligible player,” Swenson said.
Matt Fuerbringer, a standout player for the Eagles, confirmed they were forfeiting victories over Trabuco Hills, Century and Laguna Hills for using a player who became academically ineligible before the start of the second round of league play.
Estancia, which hasn’t qualified for the Southern Section playoffs since 1985, drops from second place at 8-2 to a tie for third with Trabuco Hills at 5-5. The league’s top three teams qualify for postseason play.
Estancia Athletic Director Ed Blanton said the playoff situation will be resolved today.
