Colonel Rumbo Breaks Record for 5 1/2 Furlongs

Starting on the outside of a six-horse field, Colonel Rumbo took the lead in the stretch and raced away from the field, winning the seventh race at Hollywood Park on Thursday in track record time.

Colonel Rumbo’s 1:02 1/5 for the 5 1/2 furlongs was one-fifth of a second faster than Olympic Prospect, with Alex Solis up, on Dec. 22, 1990.

Carrying 117 pounds and ridden by Corey Nakatani, Colonel Rumbo, a 5-year-old son of Rumbo trained by Thomas M. Bunn Jr., was the fourth betting choice and paid $10.60.

Colonel Rumbo started quickly, then settled in behind a field that was being paced by Kent Desormeaux, aboard Davus, and Gary Stevens, on Black Jack Attack. As Davus faded, Colonel Rumbo took the lead over Black Jack Attack coming down the stretch and won by 4 1/2 lengths. Davus was third.

In the feature race, Solis rallied Rare Cat from fifth place at the quarter pole to win a 1 1/8-mile allowance race on the turf.
