The press release says this presidential candidate has been a surgeon, teacher, business executive, fashion editor and astronaut.
Does the candidate measure up to the likes of President Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot? Not exactly. She’s only 11 1/2 inches tall.
Mattel Inc., the El Segundo toy maker, has launched a “Barbie for President” campaign that’s more sales-oriented than political.
The candidate version of the doll, sold at Toys R Us stores, boasts a tailored business suit and a “star-spangled” inaugural gown.
Despite the touted qualifications, Barbie comes up short in another area. The doll was first issued in 1959. That means that she’s 33--two years short of the minimum age for President.
However, Mattel says Barbie’s handlers--mainly young girls--are undaunted. “Barbie is as old as any girl wants her to be,” a spokeswoman said.
