Fire Spares Town, Rages Out of Control

A brush fire spread within the city limits of the Shasta County community of Burney on Monday, causing the evacuation of 50 residents before it changed direction and spread into uninhabited rugged brushland, authorities said.
More than 500 acres had burned by late Monday and the blaze was out of control as firefighters made a house-to-house stand in the town of 3,425 and prevented homes or other structures from burning, said Sharron Wages, a spokeswoman for the California Division of Forestry.
Twelve water-dropping aircraft and 269 firefighters battled the blaze, and more personnel and equipment will be used against the flames today, officials said.
Burney is about 50 miles east of Redding in northeastern California.
