BREA : Leak in Gas Pipe Causes Evacuations
- Share via
Firefighters shut down Imperial Highway for 10 minutes and evacuated two buildings just before noon Tuesday because of a gas leak caused by a construction crew, officials said.
Workers widening a storm drain at 956 E. Imperial Highway accidentally struck a two-inch gas pipe underground, Brea Fire Capt. George Taunton said. Gas leaked for 20 minutes before an emergency crew clamped the pipe.
About 50 people who were in Millie’s Restaurant and the Mechanics Bank were evacuated, and the road was closed in both directions in case the leak ignited. But the pipe was sealed without incident, and there were no injuries or permanent damage, Taunton said.
