MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — Firefighters fully contained a wildfire that blackened nearly 8,800 acres of timber in the Eastern Sierra, but officials were uncertain when the fire would be doused.
The Mammoth Lakes Basin, a popular camping and fishing area, and the Mammoth Mountain Inn reopened after being evacuated Aug. 21. The fire began when winds fanned a log smoldering from a lightning strike about two weeks earlier.
