A sailor on a San Diego-based navy missile tanker was recovering from an emergency operation Saturday after his appendix burst en route to Hawaii.
The crewman on the USS Reid, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was in fair condition Saturday after being taken Thursday morning by helicopter to a larger ship, the USS Belleau Wood, a Navy spokesman said.
A surgeon and other medical personnel were flown about 900 miles from Oakland Naval Hospital to the Belleau Wood. The sailor underwent surgery Thursday night, the spokesman said.
The sailor will remain on the Belleau Wood and be taken to the U.S. Army Hospital in Honolulu, the spokesman said.
