A 24-year-old clerk was shot in the back Saturday night as he leaped behind a bulletproof shield and thwarted would-be robbers, police said Sunday.
After purchasing a six-pack of beer, a man pulled out a gun and attempted to rob the Mobil gas station in the 4500 block of Claremont Mesa Boulevard at 10:54 p.m. The clerk, Maen Sweis, tried to hide behind the bulletproof shield but was hit in the back by the gunman’s shot.
The gunman fled with four other men, possibly driving off in a white van, police said.
