HUNTINGTON BEACH : Children Cast Off Sin in Jewish Custom

Schoolchildren from the Hebrew Academy here symbolically cast their sins into the lake at Central Park, in a Jewish custom known as “Tashlich.”
The ceremony is held during or immediately after the Rosh Hashana holiday, which celebrates the coming of a new year with an emphasis on charity and repenting sins.
The custom stems from a biblical call for Jews to “cast all sins into the depths of the sea.” To accomplish this, Jews go to a river, lake or ocean to pray and symbolically rid themselves of sin by emptying their pockets.
