San Clemente football Coach Mark McElroy has a way with goals--both in setting and achieving them.
In 1988, while working on his doctorate in sports leadership at BYU, McElroy wrote in his journal that some day he would coach and teach at either a small college or at his alma mater, San Clemente High. Before taking over the Triton program, McElroy coached and taught at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash.
McElroy, 32, also said he would complete a marathon and a triathlon before his 35th birthday. He has done both. He says he’ll write a book before he’s 45. And though he didn’t put a time limit on it, he says he wants to get more people interested in Triton football. He’s starting with a certain segment of the population.
McElroy is inviting all senior citizens (62 and older)--from San Clemente and beyond--to attend the Tritons’ game Oct. 16 against Dana Hills. Not only will senior citizens be admitted free, women will receive free corsages.
