Moorpark College moved up two places to No. 4 in this week’s Southland JC Football poll. The Raiders (3-0) defeated L.A. Southwest, 24-20, on Saturday.
Antelope Valley (2-0-1) and Valley (2-0-1) colleges also were victorious and moved to the brink of the top 10. Antelope Valley is 12th, one place ahead of Valley.
Saddleback (4-0) remained No. 1. The Gauchos got 14 of a possible 15 first-place votes after defeating previously third-ranked El Camino, 35-17. The other first-place vote went to No. 2 Bakersfield (3-0), which will play Glendale at Glendale High on Saturday.
Antelope Valley’s defensive line was so dominant in blanking Rio Hondo, 21-0, last Saturday that the Foothill Conference could not single out a standout.
So instead of a defensive player of the week, the conference recognized the Marauders’ entire defensive front--Rick Nickols, Carl Taylor, Percy Ford and Rafael Gutierrez, who combined for 20 tackles and seven sacks.
Danny Daniels and Nancy Nicholls have been honored as Cal State Northridge’s September athletes of the month.
Daniels, a senior forward on the Matadors’ soccer team, accounted for 11 points on four goals and three assists in eight games.
Nicholls, a senior middle blocker on the women’s volleyball team, was named to three all-tournament teams during the month and reached double figures in kills in 13 of 16 matches.
Saadite Green, a transfer from Cal State Fullerton who joined the Cal State Northridge team a week into the season, earned offensive-player-of-the-week honors. Green caught five passes for 103 yards in a 30-7 loss to Idaho. The defensive player of the week was reserve linebacker Bryon Ward who intercepted one pass, deflected two others and made five tackles. Punter Albert Razo, the special teams player of the week, boomed punts of 57 and 50 yards and wound up with an average of 37.6 yards on 10 punts.
Crescenta Valley High senior Adam Jacobsen, who is tied for the Southern Section lead with 288 three-point baskets, has committed to play basketball at University of the Pacific.
Ron Winger of Tarzana lost to Robert Gibbs, 203-169, in the first match of the stepladder finals of the $75,000 Hammer Naples Senior Open bowling tournament Wednesday in Naples, Fla.
Wayne Crosadale of Palmdale won the gold medal in dual slalom in the World Mountain Bike Championship last month in Canada.
Registration has begun at The Master’s College for a series of basketball clinics beginning Oct. 17.
