Hollywood : Housing Complex Opens

A complex of government-sponsored housing for poor and moderate-income people was opened Tuesday by the Community Housing Corp.
Known as the Dunning Apartments, the project includes a new building with 24 apartments for low-income singles and family households.
It also incorporates the historic and newly renovated Dunning House, which will provide two units of moderate-income housing.
Councilman Michael Woo’s office and the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency were credited with putting the project together and financing it through redevelopment funds.
Local activists, however, noted that the building had been slated for demolition before they persuaded the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission to consider it three years ago for designation as a Historic-Cultural Landmark.
“Until we got this thing stopped, there was no effort to save the building,” said Robert Nudelman, a frequent critic of Woo.
