Scott Seal rushed for 237 yards in 42 carries and scored three touchdowns, including the winning points with 32 seconds to play, to lift Irvine to a 21-14 victory over Chino.
NOTEWORTHY
Getting their kicks: The first-round matchup between Newport Harbor and La Verne Damien in the Division IV playoffs featured two of the top kickers in Southern California. Damien’s Armando Hernandez came into the game with 10 field goals, including a 52-yarder. Newport Harbor’s Doug Stuckey had nine field goals and added to the total with a 22-yarder in a 31-0 victory.

What? No Limo?: School administrators at Newport Harbor organized a rooter bus for students to travel to La Verne Friday night for the Sailors’ first-round playoff game against Damien. But only four students had purchased tickets for the bus trip by noon Friday, so administrators canceled the bus.

Irvine and El Modena advanced to a quarterfinal meeting that will match El Modena’s Ernie Wilson and Irvine’s Seal, two of the county’s top running backs. Seal rushed for 1,476 yards during the regular season, Wilson 1,205.
