Workers to Get Rush From Experiment
LONDON — British Rail wants to tie some of its workers to posts near high-speed trains, a proposal that excites some thrill seekers but worries a rail union.
The experiment, scheduled for March, is intended to determine how close workers can stand to new trains operating at up to 140 m.p.h. Maintenance workers would be harnessed to posts six to nine feet from the track.
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers said it has no plans to try to stop the experiment but wants more information about it.
A British Rail spokesman said more than 50 people had called to volunteer.
