Torrance, West Are Kings of Mat : Wrestling: The schools win 11 of 13 individual titles to dominate Pioneer League meet.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Pioneer League’s two ranked wrestling teams, Torrance and West Torrance, combined to take 11 of 13 individual titles at the league tournament Thursday night at Torrance.

Torrance, ranked fourth in the Southern Section Division II rankings, won five individual titles and had three second and third-place finishers. West, ranked sixth in Division II, won six titles and had two second and four third-place finishers.

No team scores were kept, but the top three wrestlers in each weight class qualified for next weekend’s CIF Individual meet at Canyon Springs High in Moreno Valley.

For West, the league tournament gave it a chance to make up for losing the regular season title Feb. 4 to Torrance, 32-25.

“We had six champions, that’s one more than Torrance got,” West Coach Kent Wyatt said.

With the return of 145-pounder Sam Kang, West had its top team together for the first time all season. Kang placed third.

“All our kids could drop down (in weight), that really helps,” Wyatt said. “It has been hard to fill that weight.”

West’s champions included Mark Tsurata (103 pounds), who defeated El Segundo’s Rick Zambrana, 11-3; Sung Oh (112), who won by a technical fall over North Torrance’s Louie Chavez; Lance Kaneoka (125), who defeated Torrance’s Dan Ikeda, 13-4; Edson Park (130), who defeated North’s David Afoa, 3-2; Tormod Anderson (140), who defeated Torrance’s Roman Hernandez, 7-2, and Alex Chow (152), who pinned North’s Marcus Barackman with seven seconds remaining in the second period.

Torrance’s champions were Guy Ortalano (135), who defeated El Segundo’s Rob Fordham, 6-0; Hiro Ebihara (145), who pinned North’s Dino Harris with seven seconds remaining in the match; Gerald Fazis (171), who defeated West’s Doug Lee, 6-3; Raphael Davis (189), who defeated El Segundo’s Matt Jasik, 10-0, and heavyweight Justin Vega, who pinned West’s John Kim with 1:12 remaining in the second period.

“We did very well, I’m very pleased,” Torrance Coach Mike Liebig said. “We have had a very spotty year. There (have) only been two or three times where we’ve had all our horses on the mat. We had our best performances against West and Ventura, and if we wrestle like that (in CIF), we could surprise some people.”
