A 30-year-old Santa Ana woman died Tuesday after shooting herself in the chest on a street next to a psychiatric hospital, police said.
Standing in the 2200 block of East 4th Street, she yelled that she had a gun and was going to commit suicide. Authorities declined to identify the woman, pending notification of family members.
A hospital employee called police about 9:20 a.m. Officers at the scene saw the woman sitting near a hospital wall, Lt. Robert Helton said. She then held a gun to her chest and fired.
She was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she died at 10:15 a.m.
Police said they did not know if the woman was a patient at the hospital. Officers recovered a .25-caliber handgun used in the shooting, Helton said.
Hospital officials refused comment.
