LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Racial Tension Rumor Hot Line Inaugurated
- Share via
The Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission has started a rumor hot line to receive information about racial tension and related issues.
By calling 1-800-2GO-TALK, county residents can hear an explanatory message and then record rumors about racial problems and similar kinds of concerns. Commission staff will attempt to verify reported rumors and call back those who leave their names and numbers, said Eugene Mornell, the commission’s executive director.
A decision on whether to continue the hot line will be made based primarily on its volume of calls, Mornell said.
The commission operated a similar rumor center during the 1984 Olympics, when about 1,200 calls were received over three weeks. Forty of the calls were about violence or potential violence, officials said.
