FADING AWAY: Superior Court is losing one of its most colorful judges. Donald A. McCartin, who once told killer Rodney Alcala at his death sentence that his defense was “hogwash,” will retire soon after the current murder case he’s presiding over. . . . McCartin, who has sentenced nine men now on Death Row, says he’ll live part time in Bass Lake, Calif. “If they need an extra judge up in the boondocks, I might help a little,” he says.
