Debate Over National Health Care
The pharmaceutical industry recently placed a full-page ad in The Times (March 2); it requested a response. This is mine.
I don’t question the pharmaceutical industry’s commitment to and accomplishments in medical research, but the ad, in trying to influence health care reform legislation, is entirely self-serving and should be viewed with great skepticism.
America desperately needs universal, comprehensive health care, including long-term care, at affordable costs. This is achievable, but only if control over drug, doctor and hospital costs are imposed. This would, of course, result in a cutback in the profit levels of the health care industry.
The huge, powerful health care industry will fight tooth and nail with its almost bottomless pocketbook to prevent legislation that adversely affects its bottom line.
