‘Howards’ Beginning?: “Howards End” was the big winner at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards, the British version of the Oscars, which were announced by satellite hookup in London and L.A. on Sunday. Emma Thompson won the best actress award for her role in the movie, which was also named best film. Robert Downey Jr. took best actor for playing Charlie Chaplin in Sir Richard Attenborough’s “Chaplin.” The Alexander Korda Award for best British film went to “The Crying Game.” Robert Altman won the David Lean Award for best director for “The Player.” Woody Allen won best original screenplay for “Husbands and Wives,” Miranda Richardson was named best supporting actress for “Damage,” and Gene Hackman took the best supporting actor award for “Unforgiven.”
